S-X-AIPI: Revolutionising industry with self-X AI for a sustainable future
In a world increasingly driven by digital transformation, the European Process Industry - a broad sector of industries that are involved in transforming raw materials into finished or semi-finished products through chemical, physical, or biological processes - stands at a critical juncture, seeking innovations that promise greater efficiency, quality, and sustainability. Booster supports EU-funded projects in navigating such complex landscapes, helping researchers and innovators translate groundbreaking ideas into tangible solutions. Through Booster, S-X-AIPI, a Horizon Europe funded project that has worked on the development of self-X AI technologies, has not only advanced its core research but has also meticulously crafted pathways for further market development and uptake.
Advancing AI for industrial resilience
The S-X-AIPI project looked to address a significant challenge: the need for more practical and economically viable AI deployment in industrial settings. The project researched, developed, tested, and validated an innovative toolset of custom self-X AI technologies designed to minimise human involvement and exhibit self-improving capabilities (self-X AI is essentially AI systems that can autonomously self-learn, self-adapt, self-heal, self-optimise, and self-manage in dynamic environments without constant human intervention).
"Through the S-X-AIPI project, we have developed a modular, scalable, and interoperable trustworthy artificial intelligence toolset for the process industry, where the AI solutions are capable of self-configuration or self-optimisation," Daniel explained. "The challenge lies in enabling complex industrial environments – often using legacy systems – to adopt trustworthy AI solutions as a common framework."
The project's ambitions are clear: to improve productivity, reduce overall scrap rates, and cut manufacturing cycle times. Beyond operational efficiency, S-X-AIPI is projected to contribute to a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions, and support circular manufacturing by reducing waste and resource use. However, transforming such sophisticated technological advancements into widespread industrial adoption requires more than just successful development: it demands a clear market strategy.
Tailored support for strategic market entry
Ensuring research findings lead to meaningful change, especially for advanced technological solutions like S-X-AIPI's, can be complex. The project, with its modular, scalable, and interoperable trustworthy AI toolset, needed a clear roadmap for industrial adoption. Booster stepped in to offer strategic mentoring and tailored recommendations on how to navigate these obstacles.
"Our experience with Booster was extremely positive. We participated in the business plan development and the go-to-market services, and our appointed Booster expert helped us refine the framing of our exploitable results, aligning them with market needs and user value propositions.’’ added Daniel.
Through the business plan development and Go-to-Market services, Booster helped the S-X-AIPI team recognise how their innovations could be effectively packaged and presented to the target industrial sectors. This comprehensive support led to a more streamlined and structured exploitation methodology, enabling the consortium to:
- Refine the framing of their Key Exploitable Results, aligning them precisely with market needs and user value propositions.
- Develop robust business models and clear exploitation pathways for their advanced AI toolset.
- Align exploitation strategies across all partners, supported by updated business model canvases and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) strategies.
S-X-AIPI's journey showcases how Booster provided essential support to the project to transform its cutting-edge AI research into practical solutions with lasting impact, setting a benchmark for other EU-funded projects aiming for significant industrial and environmental transformation. Daniel concludes: "Thanks to Booster – and although we were already using a defined methodology – we adopted a clearer and more structured exploitation methodology. We aligned our exploitation strategies across partners with updated business model canvases and IPR strategies."
